Breast Enlargement

What is a breast augmentation

Breast enlargement is also known as a boob job, breast augmentation surgery or breast enhancement. This is the most common cosmetic breast operation performed in the UK and is popular across all age groups. In this procedure, a silicone implant is used to increase the volume of the breast.

TEARDROP IMPLANTS OR ROUND IMPLANTS: MORE NATURAL LOOKING BREAST IMPLANTS?

Teardrop implants, also called anatomical implants are more natural looking breast implants. They are thinner at the upper pole and thicker at the lower pole, similar to a natural breast. Depending on the size of breast implant compared to that of the natural breast, teardrop implants can give a more natural appearance compared to that of round implants. However, depending on the firmness of the silicone inside the implant, some round implants can also adopt a shape where the majority of the volume drops into the lower pole, giving a more teardrop implant appearance. Some people prefer a more projected cleavage which can be achieved more easily with a round breast implant (particularly with a firmer silicone fill).

under the muscle or over the muscle implants

Silicone breast implants can be placed at different depths under the natural tissue to achieve different outcomes and there are advantages and disadvantages to each option. The main positions are under the muscle (also known as subpectoral or submusclar implant) or an over the muscle implant (also known as subglandular). There is also the option of a combination of the two called “dual plane implant” technique. The position of the breast implant can have a significant impact on the aesthetic breast outcome. A submuscular implant is deeper and so sometimes better hidden, particularly in a very thin patient, where the contour around the edge of the breast implant or the texture of the implant can be visible when placed in the shallower  “over the muscle implant” position. However, there are downsides to the deeper submusclar position too – sometimes you can feel movement of the implant on physical activity due to the pec muscle contracting over the implant for example.

Which are the best or safest breast implants?

Many are aware of the PIP breast implant scandal in 2010. PIP were a large implant manufacturer based in France. In 2010, it was discovered that instead of using medical grade silicone, they had been filling breast implants with industrial grade silicone not licenced for human use. Since this scandal, large reputable breast implant manufacturers are very careful to highlight their high safety standards.

The difference between breast implant brands is relatively subtle in most cases but sometimes, one particular brand will be more suitable for a particular individual than others. For example, Mentor implants can often be slightly more projected than others (for the same overall volume). There are some wider base, lower projection options in the range of Polytech implants. Polytech also produce the b lite implants that have the advantage of being lighter than other breast implants. Some of the Motiva implants have a fill that is more natural and softer than other implants, but with a cohesion to the shell such that “rippling” is reduced (i.e. a complication where it can be possible to see ripples in the skin surface as a consequence of creases appearing in the implant in thin patients with smaller natural breast volumes).

So what are the best breast implants for providing the best cosmetic outcome

As highlighted above, if only it was that simple! There are many factors to consider when choosing the shape, size, texture, fill type and brand of silicone breast implants. The perfect choice for one person would certainly not be the right implant for everyone.  Aside from simply considering what kind of breast volume you would like to have, it is just as important to think about what kind of ‘look’ you wish to achieve as this helps when making decisions about which implant size, shape and placement position would be best for you. For example, some prefer a more natural appearance and others prefer a much more projected look with a very pronounced cleavage.
