What is a Face Lift?
A face lift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that lifts and tightens the tissues of the lower face and jawline to address sagging skin, jowls and deep creases around the mouth and chin. With age, the skin loses elasticity and the deeper support layers (known as the SMAS) descend, contributing to a heavier, tired appearance.
During a face lift, incisions are typically placed discreetly around the ears and sometimes within the hairline. The underlying support layer is lifted and repositioned, and excess skin is gently removed. This creates a smoother jawline and more youthful contours, while preserving a natural, unforced appearance. In some cases, a face lift is combined with neck lift, eyelid surgery or fat transfer to enhance overall balance.
The goal is not to change who you are, but to turn back some of the visible signs of ageing, giving a softer, more rested look that can last for many years.

Consultation & Preparation

Assessment & Planning:
In consultation, Mr Andrew Pieri and team will assess your facial structure, skin quality and areas of concern such as jowls, neck laxity and deep folds. Photographs aid planning and discussion. You will explore what can be improved with a face lift alone and where additional procedures (for example, eyelid surgery) may or may not be beneficial, always with a focus on a natural result. -
Pre-operative Guidelines:
You will be advised to stop smoking well ahead of surgery, as it significantly affects wound healing and scar quality. Blood-thinning medications and certain supplements may need to be paused. As the operation is generally performed under general anaesthetic, you will need to fast from midnight and follow tailored advice about your usual medicines. -
Practical Arrangements:
Arrange for someone to collect you and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours. Button-front or zip-front tops are easier to put on without disturbing dressings. It is helpful to prepare a comfortable resting area with extra pillows to keep your head elevated.
Surgery & Immediate Aftercare

Anaesthesia & Procedure:
Face lift surgery typically takes 2–4 hours, depending on technique and whether other procedures are combined. Incisions are placed around the ears and possibly into the hairline. The underlying SMAS layer is lifted and secured in a more youthful position, and any excess skin is trimmed without over-tightening. The incisions are closed with fine sutures or staples within the hair. Small drains may be placed to remove fluid and are usually removed within 24–48 hours. -
Dressings & Comfort:
You will wake with light dressings and sometimes a supportive bandage or garment around the face and neck. Swelling, tightness and bruising are expected and most noticeable in the first few days. Pain is usually moderate and controlled with analgesia. Numbness around the ears and cheeks is common initially and generally improves gradually.
Recovery, Results & Follow‑Up

Early Recovery (Weeks 1–2):
You will be advised to rest with your head elevated and to avoid bending or straining. Stitches are usually removed within 7–10 days. By this stage, bruising is starting to fade, and many patients feel comfortable going out with makeup to camouflage residual marks. -
Resuming Activities:
Gentle walking is encouraged early on, but strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and activities that significantly raise blood pressure should be avoided for at least 3–4 weeks. You should avoid hair colouring and heat treatments until the incisions have healed fully and you have been given the all-clear. -
Healing & Outcome:
Much of the swelling settles over 2–4 weeks, but refinement continues for several months. Scars are initially pink, gradually fading and becoming less noticeable, often concealable within the hairline and natural creases. The result is typically a more defined jawline, smoother lower face and a fresher, less tired appearance that still looks like you. -
Follow-Up Appointments:
You will be reviewed at regular intervals in the early post-operative period and again over the following months to ensure smooth healing and to guide scar care and return to normal activities.
