Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)

Our eyelid lift service smooths and brightens the eye area by removing excess skin and, where needed, fat, helping to reduce heaviness, puffiness and tired-looking eyes while maintaining a natural, expressive appearance.

Mr Andrew Pieri and his team performs upper and lower eyelid surgery to address drooping lids, hooding and under-eye bags that can make you look tired, sad or older than you feel. With meticulous attention to the delicate tissues around the eye, he aims to refresh your appearance while preserving your individual character and eyelid function.

What is an Eyelid Lift?

Eyelid lift surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a procedure to remove excess skin and sometimes fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Over time, the skin of the eyelids can stretch and weaken, leading to hooded upper lids, creasing and puffiness. In some cases, excess skin can even begin to obstruct the upper field of vision.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty involves a carefully placed incision in the natural crease of the upper lid, through which excess skin, and occasionally muscle or fat, is removed. Lower eyelid surgery may be performed through an incision just below the lash line or from inside the lid (transconjunctival approach), depending on the changes needed. Fine sutures are used and removed after a few days, or may be dissolvable.

The aim of eyelid lift surgery is to create a fresher, more open-eyed appearance, not to change your eye shape. For many patients, relatively small adjustments can make a significant difference to how rested and alert they look.

What to Expect from Eyelid Lift Surgery

Consultation & Preparation

  • Assessment & Planning:
At consultation, Mr Andrew Pieri and his team will examine your eyelids, eyebrow position and surrounding skin, as well as assessing your eye health and tear film. Photographs are taken to aid planning and discussion. You will talk through what bothers you most, whether that is hooding, asymmetry or under-eye bags, and which combination of procedures can best address these concerns.

  • Pre-operative Guidelines:
You will be advised about medications and supplements that should be avoided prior to surgery to reduce bleeding and bruising. Smoking cessation and moderation of alcohol intake are encouraged to support healing. Depending on whether local anaesthetic with sedation or general anaesthetic is used, you will receive clear instructions about fasting and ongoing medications.

  • Practical Arrangements:
Arrange for someone to accompany you home after surgery, as your vision may be temporarily blurry due to ointments and swelling. Having cold compresses, artificial tears and extra pillows ready at home can be helpful in the early recovery period.

Surgery & Immediate Aftercare

  • Anaesthesia & Procedure:
Eyelid surgery is commonly performed under local anaesthetic with or without sedation, or occasionally general anaesthetic. The procedure usually takes 1–2 hours, depending on whether upper, lower or both sets of lids are treated. Precise incisions are made in natural creases or within the lower lid, excess skin and fat are adjusted, and the wounds are closed with very fine sutures.

  • Dressings & Comfort:
After surgery, your eyes may feel tight, watery or gritty. Cold compresses and head elevation help reduce swelling and bruising, which are most noticeable in the first few days. Lubricating eye drops or ointments may be recommended. Mild discomfort can be managed with simple painkillers.

Recovery, Results & Follow‑Up

  • Early Recovery (Weeks 1–2):
Bruising and swelling around the eyes are common, often peaking in the first 3–4 days and gradually improving thereafter. Stitches, if non-dissolvable, are usually removed after about a week. Many patients feel comfortable returning to desk-based work and social activities with light makeup after this point.

  • Resuming Activities:
Strenuous exercise, bending and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 2 weeks to minimise the risk of bleeding. Contact lens use may need to be paused initially, with a temporary switch to glasses recommended until the eyelids are more comfortable.

  • Healing & Outcome:
The eyes typically look brighter and more open, with less heaviness and puffiness. Scars are fine and usually well hidden in natural creases or under the lashes, fading over several months. Subtle asymmetries are normal in human faces and will be discussed during planning to set realistic expectations.

  • Follow-Up Appointments:
You will be seen shortly after surgery and again at around 1–3 months to monitor healing, address any concerns and ensure you are happy with the outcome.
