What is Ear Pinning?
Ear pinning, or otoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to correct protruding ears by reshaping and repositioning the cartilage closer to the head.
Performed under local or general anaesthesia, the operation typically involves a discreet incision behind the ear, allowing precise adjustment of the cartilage with minimal scarring.
Suitable for adults and children alike, ear pinning can improve facial symmetry and reduce self‑consciousness, delivering a natural, long‑lasting enhancement in just one straightforward treatment.

What to Expect from Ear Pinning (Otoplasty) Surgery
Consultation & Preparation
- Assessment & Planning: Mr Andrew Pieri and his team will review your medical history, examine your ear anatomy and cartilage quality, and discuss your desired outcome. Clinical photographs assist in surgical planning and setting realistic expectations.
- Pre‑operative Guidelines: You’ll be advised to avoid certain medications (e.g. aspirin), cease smoking and limit alcohol consumption. If you’re booked under general anaesthetic, you must fast from midnight; for local anaesthetic with sedation, you’ll receive tailored instructions.
- Practical Arrangements: Organise for someone to collect you and stay with you for at least 24 hours. On the day, wear loose‑fitting, front‑opening clothing to avoid disturbing dressings.
Surgery & Immediate Aftercare
- Anaesthesia & Procedure: Adults typically have local anaesthetic with light sedation (children a brief general anaesthetic). The operation lasts around 1–2 hours. A small incision is made behind each ear, cartilage is reshaped—either scored, folded or trimmed—and secured with fine sutures.
- Dressings & Comfort: Your ears will be wrapped in a soft dressing or supportive headband to maintain shape and protect the area. Mild discomfort, tightness or pressure is normal and managed effectively with prescribed pain relief.
Recovery, Results & Follow‑Up
-
Early Recovery (Weeks 1–2): Keep your head elevated when resting. Change dressings as instructed, keeping the area clean and dry. Around day 5–7, the bulky bandage is replaced by a lighter support headband, which should be worn at night for up to 4 weeks.
-
Resuming Activities: Most patients return to desk‑based work within 7–10 days. Avoid strenuous exercise or contact sports for at least 4–6 weeks.
-
Healing & Outcome: Swelling and bruising usually subside over 2–3 weeks, with final ear position and contour settling over 2–6 months. Scars hidden behind the ears mature into fine, discreet lines.
-
Follow‑Up Appointments: You’ll have reviews at approximately 1 week, 1 month and 3–6 months post‑op to monitor healing, address any concerns and ensure you’re delighted with your results. Mr Pieri’s team remains on hand throughout your recovery.
