Breast Cancer Surgery

Operations for breast cancer...

Surgery remains the primary treatment for most types of breast cancer. Over the past decade, research has highlighted the significant negative impact that breast cancer surgery can have on a patient’s body image and with it, self confidence and self esteem. Consequently, the concept of the ‘oncoplastic’ breast surgeon has evolved. An oncoplastic breast surgeon is trained to be both an expert in breast cancer removal and also an expert in breast plastic surgery techniques to reshape or reconstruct the breast to optimise the aesthetic appearance following breast cancer surgery.

These plastic surgery operations have extended the proportion of  breast cancer patients that can safely undergo breast conserving surgery as opposed to a mastectomy, without compromising the quality of their cancer treatment but significantly improving their cosmetic result in the long term.

Alongside the breast cancer excision procedure, the majority of patients with invasive cancer will also undergo a procedure to remove some lymph nodes from under their arm on the same side as the breast cancer.

Click on the links below for more information on types of mastectomy operations, types of lumpectomy (or ‘breast conserving’) operations, types of lymph node operations that are performed for breast cancer and a brief overview of reconstruction options, either after a mastectomy or during the same operation as the mastectomy.
